Wodonga West Primary School Kindness in Action
The students of Wodonga West Primary School have shown that kindness can come in many forms — from a gold coin donation to a handmade scarf stitched with care. On the final day of term two, the school’s Student Leadership Council (SLC) organised a casual clothes day to raise funds for better cancer care in the region, with students proudly contributing what they could. Together, their efforts raised an impressive $408.15 for Sunshine Trust.
But their generosity did not stop there. A group of Year 3 and 4 students also put their creativity and care into action, knitting more than 20 homemade scarves to donate to the Wellness Centre. Each scarf was accompanied by a handwritten note, offering words of comfort and encouragement to patients and families as they navigate their cancer journey.
Michelle Heintze-Moller, Year 5/6 Teacher and SLC Coordinator, said the students were determined to support a local charity and wanted their contribution to make a difference close to home. “It was completely student driven and they wanted to ensure the money stayed local,” Michelle said. “The SLC did everything from choosing the date to collecting the contributions. It was wonderful to see the leadership from the SLC and the support from every student in the school.”
Sunshine Trust Manager Andrew Mackinlay said the care and enthusiasm shown by the school community was truly heartwarming. “The thought and effort that went into this initiative from the SLC and the Year 3 and 4 students is very special,” Andrew said. “These scarves and messages of support will bring comfort to patients and families, and the funds raised will help support local cancer care. It is a beautiful example of kindness in action.”
Through their leadership, creativity and compassion, the Wodonga West Primary School community has reminded us that everyone has something meaningful to give. No matter your age, a thoughtful gesture can make a lasting difference — especially when locals come together to support locals.
